10 DIY Home Improvement Ideas

July 30th, 2010 · No Comments

DIY Home Improvement Idea #1

Install handmade shelves. Rather than purchasing typical cookie-cutter shelves, consider visiting a local craft fair or woodworker for customized shelves. Everything from style, color, design and cutouts can be customized with handmade items. Shelves are ideal for storing tools in the garage or knick-knacks in the family room.

DIY Home Improvement Idea #2

Replace vinyl flooring or install new tiles. These days, convenience is everything. It’s easier than ever to replace vinyl flooring or install tiles with simple self-adhesive backing for easy placement. This will literally give you a new floor surface within a few hours.

DIY Home Improvement Idea #3

Install carpet. Before making a purchase, be sure to measure the area that you need to carpet. If you need to cut carpet, it’s not a problem and special cutting tools can be purchased at any home improvement store. Simply roll it out and secure it to the floor for an easy DIY home improvement project.

DIY Home Improvement Idea #4

Install a ceiling fan. Not only will this add beauty to the room, but it will also help to circulate the air. Just be careful during the installation process and when climbing up or down a ladder.

DIY Home Improvement Idea #5

If you are a big fan of wallpaper, then you already know that it can start to peel from time to time. It’s inevitable. At some point, wallpaper will need replacing and it’s arguably one of the easiest home improvement projects that you can do. Wallpaper is sold at any home improvement store and can be cut to fit any room in your home. During installation, be sure to smooth the paper as you go in order to avoid bubbled areas.

DIY Home Improvement Idea #6

If you like the idea of sitting out on the porch or deck and watching fireflies light up in the night, consider adding an outside addition to your home. Plans can be purchased online or at some home improvement stores, along with the materials needed to complete the job.

DIY Home Improvement Idea #7

Painting your home, either inside or out, is a very popular way of improving it’s overall appearance. Always be sure to read the instructions and use paint in a well-ventilated area.

DIY Home Improvement Idea #8

One of the more sensible DIY home improvement projects includes the installation of a dusk to dawn lighting system outside of the home. This type of lighting will automatically turn on if there is any movement outside of your home and is ideal for anyone, whether you live out in the country or in a larger area.

DIY Home Improvement Idea #9

As winter time rolls around, many people begin to consider replacing their windows to ensure that they are protected from the elements. Many people think of windows as simply something to look through but, in fact, they are much more than that. Windows can actually help to keep warm air inside your home and the cold air out during those harsh winter months, which will make it more comfortable for your family and also your wallet where heating costs are concerned.

DIY Home Improvement Idea #10

Install wall paneling. If you don’t like the idea of painting or simply prefer the look of paneling, a visit to your local home improvement store could be the answer to your next DIY home improvement project. Wall paneling is sold in sheets, is pre-cut and ready for installation. All you need to do is place it in the desired location and secure it.

Successful Small Business Ideas For DIY Stores

July 29th, 2010 · No Comments

Almost anywhere you go in the USA today, you find a Wal-Mart or Home Depot flaunting their ability to serve the needs of the DIY customer. They offer discount prices, large inventory on hand and overwhelming size. The challenge they pose can be daunting but with the successful small business ideas you can find the way to compete aggressively with the national chains.

One of the first things to do in order to take on the challenge of remaining as a successful business in the face of the challenge of the mega-store is to revamp your business plan Identify the weaknesses of the chains and use such successful methods as customer service and specialized inventory. As an independent DIY store owner, you have the opportunity to cater your store and service to the needs of your local market in ways that the national chains cannot.

WHAT DO YOU LOOK FOR IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD TO FIND SUCCESSFUL IDEAS?

The first step is to pay close attention to the needs of the people who live near your store. You should ask yourself questions about their ages, their main problems with their residences, and whether you want your customer to be the homeowner or the local handy man. You should also spend some time speaking to potential customers, and ask them what service would be most important for them to have.

Sally’s hardware store is an example of such market analysis. Sally realized that the demographics in her area had changed radically. It was now the case that over 50% of the homes in her area were owned by women, and over 60% of the rentals were rented by women. As a result, it was more likely that a woman would head to the hardware store for repair parts and advice than a man. So she made sure to use her feminine name for the store. She invested tremendous focus and resources to the development of repair assistance center, which was prominently featured at the entrance to her store. She made sure that all her employees were knowledgeable in DIY projects, and even conducted short trainings and demonstrations for customers.

In addition, make sure you have the right specialized inventory for your locale. If you are near water, you should have equipment boat accessories and repair service. If you are near high income residents, you may want to specialize in security systems. Remember that it is more effective marketing to pick an area and be a specialist in your store, than to try and be everything to everybody.

HOW DO YOU DETERMINE YOUR COMPETITIVE EDGE?

A quality sales & marketing plan [http://www.successful-small-business.com/small_business_marketing.html] will make sure you identify for your business their unique selling position. What it is that makes you stand out from your competitor. As a small store competing against the mega-store national chains, one of the strongest marketing methods you can offer your customers is excellent customer service.

HOW TO EXCEL AT CUSTOMER SEVICE IN DIY BUSINESS?

The CEO of Ace hardware stores, Howard Jung says that the only small hardware stores that are struggling are those that “did not make customer service their highest priority”.

As a small business you have the advantage of hand picking employees and providing the appropriate training. The most successful businesses make a point of hiring employees that are enthusiastic about their products. In a music store you would hire a music enthusiast, and the same principle holds true for a DIY hardware store. It may mean that you have to offer higher than average salaries than other places. But, by treating your employees well you ensure that ultimately your customers are the beneficiaries.

High levels of customer service also mean going the “extra mile”. Some good examples are having a company policy of answering a customer immediately and never “getting back later”. In some cases it means ordering custom parts that you do not regularly carry, just to help and satisfy the customer.

DEVELOP A STRONG AND CLEAR MARKETING MESSAGE

It can be a powerful small business marketing plan for a DIY store, if you teach all your employees to tell customers that you are there to help them solve any DIY project or problem they have. There are ways of assisting customers to solve their problems even if you do not regularly carry stock in the items.

Tell your employees to repeat that message as your company mission to each customer who walks through your door, and make sure to give them the means and opportunity to implement it. Standing by such a message day in and day out is the correct small business plan [http://www.successful-small-business.com/make_a_business_plan.html] to follow for long term success.

The Basic of DIY Home Renovation

July 20th, 2010 · No Comments

pWhy get your hands dirty by doing the work yourself?/ppThe obvious answers are that it’s fun and can save you money, sometimes big bucks. I want to emphasize that fun and savings go hand in hand. But this has a downside few people realize. You really must love doing the work in order to succeed. If, as a homeowner, you do it just to save the money, chances are it will be a long and trying project. On the other hand, if you love doing it, time will fly by and the money saved, though important, will actually seem an added bonus./ppThus the question becomes: How well suited are you to doing renovation work yourself? Is it the sort of thing you really want to and can do? In short, we’re going to organize your personal outlook. We’re going to find out your renovation aptitude!/ppThe Renovation Fantasy/ppAlmost everyone has a secret desire or fantasy. One of the most common that I’ve observed is the desire to run a successful restaurant. For some reason, almost all of us seem to think that we would make great restaurateurs./ppI assume it’s the thought of serving truly marvelous meals to other people that’s so appealing. Perhaps we see ourselves in a tuxedo or evening dress escorting elegant customers to tables set with fine linen and antique silverware. Or it may be impressing others with our knowledge of vintage wines. Or it may be preparing and serving ethnic meals that we loved as children and now hunger for as adults./ppWhatever the fantasy, the reality is almost always jarringly different. The restaurant business is tough and competitive at all levels, and most people who go into it without extensive background, particularly in food service and in financing, fail. Chances are that if one of your secret goals is to be a great restaurateur, you can forget it. The statistics suggest that you will fail at great expense./ppTo a lesser degree, the same problem prevails in b home/b renovation. Looking at a project, thinking of the money to be saved by doing it yourself, you say to yourself, Yes, that’s just the thing for me! However, is it really for you?/ppRemember, a renovation project can involve:/pp- Hard, tedious work.
br- Working with subcontractors and other people you may not particularly like.
br- Discovering only at the end of the project that you really aren’t able to turn it out as planned.
br- Realizing that you really don’t have the time to do the work yournot;self./ppI’m not trying to scare you away. I’m simply pointing out that b home/b renovating, like any endeavor, also has a downside. Simply loving the work and anticipating the profits won’t cut the mustard. You also have to be prepared for the hard knocks./p p a href=http://tablelamp.zonblog.com/ rel=dofollow title=Table LampTable Lamp/a a href=http://binoculars.zonblog.com/ rel=dofollow title=binocularsbinoculars/a /p

Going Green For Beginners

July 18th, 2010 · No Comments

pIt seems as though everyone is going green, but some people may not be sure how to begin. Being eco-friendly seems too hard or expensive. Many people like the idea of using new geothermal regulators in their b home/b because it is energy efficient. You can be very eco-friendly by installing a geothermal heat pump. Being earth friendly does not have to be expensive, or even that time consuming. You can choose your level of dedication to it. If you are interested in joining the cause, but it is not your passion then you can take little steps. On the other hand, if you really enjoy the idea and want to donate a lot of energy to it; you can./ppFor individuals who just want to make some subtle changes to their lifestyle, follow these simple steps./pp• Start carrying around a water bottle. Buy a stainless steal or durable water bottle that you can refill and reuse. This keeps you from using numerous plastic water bottles. Many stores sell these types of bottles made out of recycled material./pp• Use canvas grocery bags. These bags are great. You can fit many more groceries in them and you do not have plastic sitting around your house. They usually cost just a few dollars, and some stores even give you discounts for using them./pp• Mow your lawn in the early morning or evening. Mowing your lawn in the heat of the day adds more smog in the atmosphere. Doing it when the sun is not as strong allows for less intense smog emission. An added bonus is that it is less hot at these times as well, so there is no reason to disagree!/pp• Get out your bike. If you live within a few miles of your destination, grab your bike and ride there. If you can bike to the grocery store, invest in a basket and put your bags on your bike. It may seem trivial, but every time someone chooses to use a bike instead of a car, it makes a little difference./pp• Do a walk through of your house and check that all unused appliances and lights are turned off. Do not light an empty b home/b. When you leave a room, turn off the lights and appliances. Try to shut your computer down at the end of the day, instead of wasting energy all night long. Even doing something as easy as turning the monitor off when you are not using the computer will save energy. You can invest in energy efficient light bulbs for your house as well./pp• Run your heat and air conditioner like a pro. Do not blast the AC if you do not need to. If a fan would cool you off enough, do that instead. If its ninety degrees outside, then air conditioning is understandable, but when it is in the eighties you probably do not need it quite as high. Same with the heat do not turn on it in October. Wear socks or sweatpants if it is a little chilly for your liking. Once it actually gets cold outside, by all means use your heater. Do not be extravagant!/p p a href=http://digitalcameras.blogsxp.com/ rel=dofollow title=Digital CamerasDigital Cameras/a /p
